WhatsApp has just announced the introduction of voice message transcripts. This new feature, rolling out globally in the coming weeks, allows users to convert voice messages into text. Whether you are in a noisy environment, on the go, or prefer reading over listening, the feature ensures that you stay connected without missing important conversations.

Voice message transcriptions are designed with privacy in mind. According to WhatsApp, the transcripts are generated entirely on your device, ensuring that no one—not even WhatsApp—can access your audio or text.

To enable the feature, head to Settings > select Chats > turn on Voice message transcripts. Within this menu, you can also choose your preferred language for transcription. Once the feature is active, transcribing a voice message is as simple as long-pressing the message and tapping the transcribe option. However, note that transcription is not automatic; you will need to manually initiate it for each message.

Initially, the feature will support a limited range of languages. On iOS, support is determined by the version of the operating system. For users running iOS 16 or later, languages like English, Spanish, French, German, and Chinese are available, among others. With iOS 17, the list expands to include additional languages like Danish, Hebrew, and Malay. Android users, meanwhile, will have access to languages such as English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian.

WhatsApp has confirmed plans to expand language support over time, ensuring even broader accessibility for users worldwide.

The rollout of voice message transcripts is just one of many features Meta has introduced to keep WhatsApp competitive and user-friendly. Recent updates include tools like message drafts, which help users manage unfinished messages by marking them with a “Draft” indicator and moving the conversation to the top of the inbox.

Video calling on WhatsApp has also been enhanced with new personalization options such as filters, custom backgrounds, and HD calling. Additionally, WhatsApp is reportedly testing a reverse image search feature that will allow users to verify the authenticity of images shared in chats by searching for them on the web.
