Apple has released version 2.0 of its Sports app. The most significant update is the addition of Live Activities support, which allows users to keep track of live scores and play-by-play updates directly on their iPhone’s Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island for newer models, as well as on the Apple Watch starting with watchOS 11. This feature provides a more immersive experience for following games in real-time, eliminating the need to constantly open the app for updates.
Previously, Live Activities were only available in the Apple TV app on iOS 18, but with this update, Apple has shifted this functionality to the Sports app itself, making it a more centralized hub for live sports updates. This change means that users can enjoy real-time updates for a wide range of leagues, including the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and various soccer leagues such as the Premier League and La Liga, among others.
In addition to Live Activities, the updated app introduces a new drop-down menu that streamlines navigation between different leagues, allowing users to quickly access the games they are interested in. There’s also a new search page that makes it easier to browse through the available leagues and find specific information.
The update also brings specific optimizations for the WNBA and MLB playoffs, ensuring that fans of these leagues have the best possible experience during the postseason. Additionally, users can follow live coverage of the Campeones Cup, featuring last year’s MLS and Liga MX champions. With these additions, Apple Sports positions itself as a comprehensive source for sports news and updates, competing more directly with established apps like ESPN and Fox Sports.
For those already enjoying the start of the NFL season or following the college football season, the inclusion of play-by-play updates and a dynamic drive tracker enhances the app’s utility. This is particularly useful for situations where streaming the game isn’t possible, allowing users to stay informed with real-time data such as scores, stats, and even live betting odds.
The rollout of this update coincides with the release of iOS 18 and watchOS 11, ensuring that users have access to the latest features and enhancements. Once the new software is installed, fans can easily track their favorite teams’ games right from their Lock Screen or Apple Watch, making it more convenient than ever to stay engaged with the sports world.
The Apple Sports app is available for free on the App Store
