Apple has released tvOS 18 for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD with InSight for real-time content details, improvements to Automatic Subtitles, SharePlay integration for Apple Music, and more.
The standout feature of tvOS 18 is InSight for Apple TV+. The feature, reminiscent of Amazon Prime’s X-Ray, provides real-time information about actions, characters, and music within Apple TV+ movies and shows. Users can easily select an action to view their background and filmography or add a song playing in a scene to an Apple Music playlist. This integration enhances the viewing experience by offering contextual information on demand.
Another significant update is the improved Enhance Dialogue feature. Leveraging machine learning and computational audio enhancements, this function delivers superior vocal clarity over background music and noise. The upgrade now extends compatibility to HDMI-connected speakers, AirPods, and other Bluetooth devices, in addition to HomePod speakers, making it a versatile tool for improving audio quality across various setups.
Automatic Subtitles have also been refined in tvOS 18. Subtitles can now automatically appear during key moments, such as when the audio is muted, when the language of the content differs from the device’s language, or when users skip back to rewatch a scene. This feature ensures that viewers do not miss crucial dialogue and can follow along effortlessly.
The update also includes Live Captions for FaceTime calls, allowing users to read what others are saying directly on their TV screen. This accessibility feature is particularly useful for those who prefer or require visual text to accompany audio during video calls.
New screen saver options are another highlight of tvOS 18. The update introduces Portraits, TV and Movies, and a dynamic Snoopy screen saver, offering a broader range of choices for personalizing the Apple TV screen saver experience.
Additionally, SharePlay in Apple Music has made its debut in tvOS 18. This feature allows users to join a shared music session by scanning a QR code, enabling collaborative playlist management even for those who do not have an Apple Music subscription. This capability is ideal for social settings and shared listening experiences.
The Fitness+ app has received a redesign in tvOS 18, featuring a modernized interface with personalized workout suggestions, enhanced search capabilities, and improved awards to help users stay motivated.
However, some features have been delayed and are expected to be included in future updates, such as the new Snoopy screen savers and support for 21:9 projectors. AirPlay has also gained Spatial Audio support, including Dolby Atmos, but currently has limitations when streaming from Apple TV 4K to AirPlay speakers.
