Redesigned Magic Mouse expected to launch by 2026 with improved ergonomics

Apple is reportedly working on a redesigned version of its Magic Mouse, a long-overdue update to one of its most iconic yet divisive accessories. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, the company’s design team has been experimenting with prototypes aimed at addressing several user complaints, including the notorious bottom-mounted charging port. While details remain scarce, Gurman suggests the new Magic Mouse will feature a design that better aligns with modern demands, potentially addressing issues related to ergonomics, usability, and functionality.

Introduced in 2009, the Magic Mouse has seen few substantial updates over the years. From its initial reliance on AA batteries to the eventual switch to a rechargeable system in 2015, and more recently, the addition of USB-C connectivity, the accessory has largely retained its original design. While sleek and minimalistic, the mouse’s low-profile shape and infamous charging setup have drawn criticism for being ergonomically unfriendly and inconvenient to recharge. Users must currently flip the mouse upside down to charge it, rendering it useless during the process—an inconvenience many hope Apple will finally rectify with the redesign.

Gurman notes that Apple’s design team is exploring ways to make the new Magic Mouse more comfortable to use, likely incorporating improvements to its shape and feel. While Apple has yet to confirm specific features, speculation suggests the company could draw inspiration from popular alternatives like Logitech’s MX Master series, known for its ergonomic design, front-facing charging ports, and enhanced functionality. These changes could transform the Magic Mouse into a more versatile and user-friendly device, better suited for prolonged use and modern workflows.

Despite the anticipation, the redesigned Magic Mouse is not expected to hit the market for at least 12 to 18 months, placing its potential launch in mid-2026 or later. While this timeline leaves room for further refinements, it also means users must wait a bit longer to see how Apple plans to evolve the accessory. Given its track record with iterative updates, the redesign marks an opportunity for the tech giant to address long-standing complaints while reasserting its commitment to quality design.
