Apple has quietly increased the cost of its out-of-warranty iPhone 16 Pro battery replacement by 20%, compared to its predecessors like iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and even new models like iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
Based off the latest updates to the iPhone Repair & Service section on Apple’s website in the United States, Apple will now charge almost $20 more for battery replacement for iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. For the regular iPhone 16 models, the price will be the same as previous models. While for AppleCare+ subscribers, the battery replacement will still be free as long as the total capacity goes below 80%.
Here’s a comparison table to show how Apple has increased the battery replacement cost over time:
Model | Cost |
---|---|
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max | $119 |
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus | $99 |
iPhone 15 models | $99 |
iPhone 14 models | $99 |
iPhone 13 models | $69 |
The last time Apple increase the price for out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement was with the release of iPhone 14. The price went up from $69 to $99 at that time.
It is unclear as to why Apple chose to increase the price for battery replacement only for the Pro models. All the new iPhone 16 models feature larger batteries as well as internal improvements to thermals, which results in up to 4 more hours of battery life on the Pro models, as well as respectable increases on the standard models too.
Apple has also added support for 25W MagSafe wireless charging, allowing for up to 50% charge in 30 minutes, as well as 45W wired fast charging.
Perhaps we will have to wait for iFixit to perform a teardown before we can understand whether this is a justified price increase, or just a sign of a price increase for all future iPhones.
