According to a new report from French site iPhoneSoft, iOS 19 will be compatible with every iPhone model that is currently capable of running iOS 18, meaning a broad range of devices will continue to receive updates. This includes the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, which were initially released in 2018.

The complete list of compatible iPhones with iOS 19 is quite extensive. Models ranging from the iPhone 11 all the way to the iPhone 16 lineup, as well as the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), will be able to run iOS 19 when it launches in late 2025. This inclusive approach mirrors Apple’s decision with iOS 18, which did not drop support for any iPhone models that could run iOS 17. While this is great news for many users, it’s worth noting that certain advanced features of iOS 19 may be limited to newer iPhones due to hardware requirements. However, the majority of the software updates will be accessible to devices from 2018 onwards, ensuring a long period of usability for older iPhone models.

While iPhones will continue to enjoy robust support, the same cannot be said for all iPads. iPadOS 19 will reportedly drop support for the 7th-generation iPad released in 2019, which uses the A10 Fusion chip. With the new update, the minimum processor requirement for iPadOS will be raised to the A12 chip. As a result, older devices such as the 7th-gen iPad and 2nd-generation iPad Pro will miss out on the update, but most other iPad models from 2018 and later will be compatible with iPadOS 19. This includes the iPad mini 5th generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, and iPad Pro 2nd generation and later.

In terms of new features, there is little clarity on what to expect from iOS 19 and iPadOS 19, but rumors suggest that the update may not introduce a significant number of new functionalities, especially compared to iOS 18. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has hinted that Apple has been focusing more on refining the features introduced with iOS 18, especially those related to Apple Intelligence. As such, iOS 19 may be a more incremental update, with a greater emphasis on enhancing existing features and preparing for the future of Apple’s AI-driven capabilities.

Developers will likely get their hands on iOS 19 and iPadOS 19 during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2025, with public releases expected in September of the same year. This timeline aligns with Apple’s usual pattern of previewing major updates at WWDC before rolling them out to users a few months later. As with previous updates, the stable release will likely be accompanied by a gradual rollout of features, with some being reserved for newer hardware, particularly those equipped with Apple’s latest silicon.
