However, the entry of Apple into the foldable market in the second half of 2026 could be the turning point needed to revive the category. Apple’s dominant position in the smartphone industry is expected to drive a significant surge in foldable smartphone popularity, with industry analyst Ross Young projecting a growth rate of 30% in 2026, followed by a steady 20% growth in the years after.
Although Apple has remained tight-lipped about its plans, numerous reports suggest that the first foldable iPhone could be launched as soon as September 2026. Early leaks indicate that the device will feature a screen size between 7.9 and 8.3 inches, offering a compact yet functional design. The foldable iPhone is expected to take inspiration from existing devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, featuring a clamshell fold that allows the phone to be opened into a full-sized device and folded into a compact, pocket-friendly form.
Apple’s entry into the foldable market is expected to address some of the major challenges that have plagued earlier foldable devices, such as durability and software integration. The company’s reputation for producing high-quality, reliable products could help overcome concerns that have kept many consumers wary of folding smartphones.
