Apple’s recent launch of the M4 iMac introduced a bold new capability: support for an 8K external display, marking the first time this has been possible on a Mac. Initially, Apple’s specifications indicated that the four-port variant could handle a single 8K display at a refresh rate of 120Hz. However, an unexpected revision followed, and Apple has since updated the specification, downgrading the refresh rate to 60Hz for 8K displays on the new iMac.
This change sparked some frustration among potential buyers, who had hoped to take full advantage of 120Hz on an 8K display. While it remains true that users can connect a single 8K screen, the bandwidth limitations of Thunderbolt make 120Hz out of reach. Even the Thunderbolt 4 standard, which supports resolutions up to 8K, maxes out at a 60Hz refresh rate. For most users, this may not be a significant drawback, as 8K displays at 120Hz are rare and require considerable bandwidth that current technology can’t fully support.
In addition to supporting an 8K display, the M4 iMac can still manage up to two 6K external monitors at 60Hz, providing robust display options for content creators and professionals. The iMac’s built-in 5K Retina display remains a strong selling point, and for those seeking even more screen real estate, the ability to add two 6K displays is a powerful feature.
Apple quickly made this adjustment public, updating its website to reflect the revised specs just a day after the iMac announcement. This move demonstrates Apple’s attention to detail and commitment to ensuring accurate product information, even if it meant adjusting expectations for the iMac’s display support. The new 24-inch iMac with M4 still represents a substantial upgrade in versatility and performance, and while some may be disappointed with the shift from 120Hz to 60Hz for 8K displays, this remains a pioneering feature for Apple’s all-in-one lineup.
Beyond its display capabilities, the M4 iMac brings a range of new features designed to enhance performance and user experience. Powered by Apple’s latest 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, it offers faster processing speeds ideal for multitasking, content creation, and running demanding applications. The M4 iMac also includes Wi-Fi 6E for improved wireless performance and reduced latency, especially useful in crowded network environments.
With a 24-inch 4.5K Retina display that offers brilliant colors and sharp detail, the iMac is visually immersive right out of the box. Additionally, Apple has upgraded its Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard with USB-C for faster and more efficient charging, matching the iMac’s modern connectivity options.
