Apple has officially released visionOS 2, the latest operating system iteration for its Vision Pro headset. This update introduces various enhancements to improve user experience, from creating spatial photos to introducing new hand gestures and features. Vision Pro headsets can now be updated to VisionOS 2 through the Settings app.

One of the standout features of visionOS 2 is the ability to create 3D spatial photos from 2D images. The system transforms regular photos into immersive experiences using machine learning and depth information. Users can now view their entire photo library with added depth, bringing a new dimension to memories. The redesigned Photos app allows users to quickly find their favorite spatial photos and even trim videos in their library.

The latest update also introduces Communication Safety, a feature designed to protect sensitive videos and photos, especially for children. This feature automatically scans incoming and outgoing media for explicit content, ensuring that children are shielded from inappropriate material. If potentially harmful content is detected, the system will blur the images or videos, alerting the user and providing options for safe handling.

Customizing the Home View is now more intuitive, with the ability to rearrange apps according to personal preference, including those from compatible iPhone and iPad apps. This makes navigating the Vision Pro interface more seamless, especially with the introduction of new hand gestures. These gestures allow users to access frequently used features like the Home View and Control Center with ease. A new Travel Mode has also been introduced for train commuters, allowing users to multitask with multiple apps and enjoy entertainment during long commutes.

Environments have been improved, including the introduction of a new Bora Bora setting. These environments now support visibility of the Magic Keyboard or MacBook keyboard, making typing more accessible while immersed in the virtual space. The update also brings improvements to Personas, offering more accurate skin tones and vibrant clothing color options, along with fluid and natural hand movements.

Safari has received significant updates, including support for WebXR by default and the ability to watch web videos on a massive virtual screen. Users can now immerse themselves in panoramas that wrap around them, enhancing the browsing experience. The integration with Siri allows for content on Safari web pages to be read aloud, providing a more hands-free experience.

Guest Mode has been improved, allowing the most recent guest’s hand and eye data to be saved for up to 30 days. This feature streamlines the setup process for users who share their Vision Pro headset, making it easier for guests to access the device without repeating the setup. In addition, the Vision Pro can now function as an AirPlay receiver, enabling users to mirror content from their iPhone or iPad to the headset.

In terms of accessibility, visionOS 2 introduces Live Captions for real-time transcriptions of speech, audio, and video content, including FaceTime calls. It also provides the ability to invert colors for better visibility and to automatically dim video content that depicts flashing or strobing lights, catering to users with specific needs.

The update also paves the way for future enhancements, such as a larger ultrawide view for a connected Mac and support for Multiview for MLS and MLB games, set to arrive later this year.
