Apple fans, mark your calendars for an exciting week ahead as Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, has teased a “week of announcements” starting Monday, October 28, 2024. While Apple is not hosting a formal October event this year, it seems the company is gearing up for a steady stream of product updates throughout the week. New Macs featuring the long-anticipated M4 chips are expected to be at the forefront.
This news comes after a flurry of rumors about Apple’s plans for its next generation of Macs. Noted Apple analyst Mark Gurman has been one of the primary sources, suggesting that the company is preparing to roll out a refreshed lineup of MacBook Pros, Mac Minis, and iMacs, all powered by the new M4 series of chips. The M4 chip was first introduced in May 2024 with the latest iPad Pro models, and its arrival in Apple’s Mac lineup has been eagerly anticipated.
The biggest excitement centers around Apple’s rumored M4 MacBook Pros, which are expected to come in both 14-inch and 16-inch variants with three different chip configurations: the standard M4, the more powerful M4 Pro, and the top-tier M4 Max. These new chips promise substantial improvements in both computational and graphical performance, which has made them highly anticipated by creatives, professionals, and power users.
The base M4 model, likely to be featured in the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, is expected to deliver a significant boost over the previous M3 generation. Higher-end models in both the 14-inch and 16-inch sizes are expected to sport the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, which are rumored to push the limits of Apple’s silicon technology, offering unprecedented speed and efficiency. In fact, leaked videos from Russian YouTubers have already surfaced, showing what appear to be M4-equipped MacBook Pros, adding further speculation that these devices are just around the corner.
Apple’s Mac Mini is also rumored to get a significant refresh, with whispers of a new, more compact design that could make it Apple’s smallest desktop computer to date. This new Mac Mini is rumored to be roughly the size of an Apple TV, marking a significant reduction in size compared to its predecessor. It’s expected to come in both M4 and M4 Pro configurations, offering desktop-class power in a small form factor that appeals to a broad range of users.
The beloved iMac is also expected to get a notable internal update. While the design of the new iMac is likely to remain largely unchanged, the addition of the M4 chip will bring significant performance improvements. The iMac’s vibrant color options are expected to continue, and the real excitement lies in the internal performance boosts from the M4 chip. Alongside the updated iMac, it’s also possible that we’ll see new versions of Apple’s peripherals, including USB-C versions of the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad.
Despite the excitement surrounding these performance enhancements, no major design changes are expected for the MacBook Pro or iMac this time around. Apple seems to be focusing on what’s under the hood, with the primary selling point being the improved processing power of the M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips. One significant change could be an upgrade in RAM configurations for the entry-level models. Rumors suggest Apple will increase the base RAM from 8GB to 16GB, which would significantly enhance multitasking, machine learning integration, and graphics performance.
In addition to the new Macs, Apple is expected to roll out software updates with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 on October 28. These updates will introduce a suite of Apple Intelligence features designed to make interactions with Apple’s ecosystem more seamless and intuitive. Some of the key features include enhanced Siri functionality, Writing Tools for improved text editing, Clean Up in Photos for automatic organization, and the ability to drag and drop items between a Mac and iPhone using iPhone Mirroring.
For macOS Sequoia users, Apple Intelligence is set to play a key role with new AI-powered features like Notification Summaries and additional widget customization. A new Image Playground app for macOS will also allow users to experiment with photos and images using AI tools directly from their Macs.
