WhatsApp is rolling out new features that closely resemble those found in Instagram Stories, enhancing the platform’s popular Status updates. One of the most significant additions is the ability for users to tag other people in their Status. This new functionality makes it easier for users to interact with friends and family through more personalized content sharing on the app.
The new tagging feature allows users to mention up to five other WhatsApp accounts in their Status updates. Once tagged, these users will receive a private notification and can choose to reshare the Status on their own account. The difference between WhatsApp’s implementation and Instagram’s is privacy control. WhatsApp allows users to tag others without explicitly displaying their names in the Status, providing an added layer of discretion.
In addition to tagging, WhatsApp is also introducing a “like” feature for Status updates. This allows users to quickly react to friends’ posts with a simple tap, similar to the Instagram “heart” button. However, unlike Instagram, the number of likes remains private, with only the creator of the Status able to view who liked it. This feature adds a new dimension to Status engagement, making it more interactive but maintaining a level of privacy that many WhatsApp users value.
These updates to WhatsApp’s Status come just after the announcement of new video call effects, including customizable filters and backgrounds. Users can now choose from ten different filters and backgrounds during video calls, creating a more personalized and engaging experience. WhatsApp’s recent focus on video enhancements seems to be aimed at creating a more visually appealing and fun environment for users who regularly use the platform for communication. Whether it’s using playful filters or concealing their background with a cozy coffee shop scene, the new effects offer more ways to connect and express oneself during video calls.
WhatsApp’s Status updates and video call enhancements are rolling out globally and should be available to all users in the coming weeks. The platform is also continuing to improve its Channels feature, making it easier for users to explore content based on categories like People, Organizations, Sports, and Entertainment.
