Spotify has introduced a new feature called Offline Backup, aimed at ensuring Premium users can keep enjoying music even without an internet connection. The feature is rolling out globally on both Android and iOS, offering a solution to those moments when users find themselves without a connection and haven’t manually downloaded any playlists.

The new Offline Backup feature leverages Spotify’s local cache system to automatically create a playlist of recently streamed or queued songs that have already been stored on the device. This means users can listen to music without needing additional data or storage. This playlist will adapt over time to reflect the listener’s evolving tastes, ensuring a fresh selection of songs is always available.

Spotify’s Offline Backup is particularly useful in scenarios where users forget to download their favorite playlists ahead of time, such as before boarding a plane or traveling to an area with limited connectivity. While Spotify has long allowed users to download music for offline listening, this new feature removes the need for manual setup. The playlist appears automatically whenever the user’s device goes offline, and it can be filtered by artist, mood, or genre, making it easy to find the right track for any situation.

The feature is exclusive to Premium subscribers and will also work with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, making it ideal for listening on the go. To access Offline Backup, users need to ensure they have listened to more than five songs recently and have enabled offline listening in their settings. Once these criteria are met, the Offline Backup playlist will show up in the app’s Home feed when the device is offline. Users can also add the playlist to their library for easier access.

After testing Offline Backup with users last year and receiving positive feedback, we’re excited to offer this to Premium users globally. Offline Backup will begin rolling out on Android and iOS this week, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Spotify developed this feature after receiving positive feedback during user testing last year, and it’s now available to all Premium subscribers globally. This innovation is similar to features offered by other streaming platforms, such as YouTube Music’s Offline Mixtape, but with the unique advantage of evolving with each user’s listening habits.
